Jesse Eisenberg is Lex Luthor, Jeremy Irons is Alfred in "Man of Steel" Sequel

By Dave Bouressa

Let me be the first to say....WHAT?!

Irons, I could see as Alred. I think the actor plays "sinister" a little better than he plays genuine warm-hearted butler, but I can see it. But Jesse Eisenberg playing Lex Luthor?!

Man of Steel director, Zack Snyder had this to say about the casting:

“Lex Luthor is often considered the most notorious of Superman’s rivals, his unsavory reputation preceding him since 1940,” Snyder said. “What’s great about Lex is that he exists beyond the confines of the stereotypical nefarious villain. He’s a complicated and sophisticated character whose intellect, wealth and prominence position him as one of the few mortals able to challenge the incredible might of Superman. Having Jesse in the role allows us to explore that interesting dynamic, and also take the character in some new and unexpected directions.”

“As everyone knows, Alfred is Bruce Wayne’s most trusted friend, ally and mentor, a noble guardian and father figure,” Snyder said. “He is an absolutely critical element in the intricate infrastructure that allows Bruce Wayne to transform himself into Batman. It is an honor to have such an amazingly seasoned and gifted actor as Jeremy taking on the important role of the man who mentors and guides the guarded and nearly impervious fa├žade that encapsulates Bruce Wayne.”

Like I said, I could see Irons playing the role of Alred. It's a bit out of his usual casting choice, but as far as an old stuffy british man, Irons can pull it off. But I'm still believing that Jesse Eisenberg as Luthor is some kind of prank. Don't get me wrong, I think Eisenberg is a damn fine actor. But keep in mind, we're talking Lex Luthor here-the sworn enemy of Superman. This is the character that when they had to come up with an animated version of him and needed to find a voice, they cast Clancy Brown. Clancy "I've got the voice that reeks of evil genius" Brown!!!

At this point, we can do nothing but wait until we see the two of them up on screen. As of now, "Man of Steel 2" has been riddled with very odd casting and with nudging from Warner Brothers and DC, should result in an interesting film one way or the other. Only time will tell...

Man of Steel 2 comes out May 6th, 2016
