Today the internet rumbles as the Harry Potter fandom rushes to their closets and pulls out their cloaks and wands, shaking off the dust and yelling with an inarticulate glee at a volume that only dogs have the ability to hear. Fresh off of suffering through the Bling Ring (twice!) for Emma Watson flexing her American accent and searching avidly for the gay romance film Daniel Radcliffe is making – what is Rupert Grint even doing anymore? – the fans finally have a reason to celebrate again as the blessed words come straight from JK Rowling herself: there will be another Harry Potter movie.
After having already stated that Harry’s story is done and that while she could write more about his future she won’t, and with the idea of a Marauder’s Era book or movie not even on the horizon, Harry Potter fans were definitely not expecting the news they got today. Based on one of the supplemental books released for kids alongside the actual series itself, the new movie by Warner Bros. and Rowling will focus on Newt Scamander, the author of one of Harry’s in-universe school books Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them.
There is very little about the movie that has been released beyond the concept. It will be based in New York about seventy years before Harry’s story even begins (so unfortunately the option to include cameos of beloved characters are now limited to the older generation) and will follow the writer himself.
We do know, however, that Rowling herself will write the screenplay. It is a well-known fact to fans that JK Rowling has notebooks upon notebooks of in-universe facts and details that have never and will never make it into the Harry Potter books. When approached by Warner Bros. about the idea for a new Potter movie, Rowling only agreed because of her involvement in it.
“It all started when Warner Bros. came to me with the suggestion of turning ‘Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them’ into a film,” the multi-billionaire author of Harry Potter said. “I thought it was a fun idea, but the idea of seeing Newt Scamander, the supposed author of ‘Fantastic Beasts’, realized by another writer was difficult. Having lived for so long in my fictional universe, I feel very protective of it and I already knew a lot about Newt. As hard-core Harry Potter fans will know, I liked him so much that I even married his grandson, Rolf, to one of my favourite characters from the Harry Potter series, Luna Lovegood.” - Deadline.com
The internet is understandably blowing up about the news as the dormant Harry Potter fandom pops out of the woodwork jumping around and trying to remember where they put their Hogwarts house ties. The news is undoubtedly exciting not only to regular fans but to the stars as well. Notable Harry Potter fangirl and Luna Lovegood actress Evanna Lynch took to Twitter to flail about the news, even subtly prompting Warner Bros. about a part in the new movie.
Whether we see old faces or fall in love with new ones, it’s quite a magical and emotional day for Harry Potter and at this point the news can only get better from here.
