When Valve says something, people listen.
When the Director for the new Star Trek film and Star Wars Episode VII says something, people listen.
So when the founder of Valve, Gabe Newell and J.J. Abrams say something together, people's minds explode.
At the D.I.C.E Summit, which is an annual gathering for video game executives, Newell had this to say about Abrams: "We're going to try and figure out if we can make a Half-Life movie or a Portal movie together". Abrams also chimed in, stating "It's as real as anything in Hollywood ever gets".
At this point, no details have been released aside from the fact that these films are simply in the "idea" stage. However, given Abram's impressive resume now holding two of the biggest sci-fi franchises in history, it will be interesting to see what he does with these franchises. And one can only hope that Valve is involved as much as possible. Valve (in my opinion) has never put out a bad game, and their involvement will almost guarantee a massive hit.
For quite some time, fans have created fan-films, and they have proven that with a decent budget and great story telling, a successful Portal film CAN be made.
Check out this incredible short film by Dan Trachtenberg.
This is but one of the many fan films on youtube that prove that the success of these films is a very real possibility if put in the right hands. And lucky for us, the right hands it is.
